bell hooks (stylized in lowercase)
, the pen name of Gloria Jean Watkins (1952–2021), was an influential American author, cultural critic, feminist theorist, and educator whose work reshaped the landscape of contemporary thought on race, gender, and social class. Her writing explored the intersectionality of race, capitalism, and gender , and what she described as their ability to produce and perpetuate systems of oppression and class domination, and to advocate for a vision of social justice grounded in love, community, and inclusivity. Over the course of a prolific career, hooks published more than thirty books and numerous scholarly articles that bridged academic theory and personal reflection, making complex ideas accessible to a wide readership.

Her seminal work AIN’T I A WOMAN? BLACK WOMEN AND FEMINISM (1981) critiqued both the racism in mainstream feminist movements and the sexism in Black liberation struggles, arguing that the marginalization of Black women must be central to any genuine feminist analysis. In FEMINIST THEORY: FROM MARGIN TO CENTER (1984), hooks expanded this critique, calling for an inclusive feminism that moves beyond the experiences of white, middle-class women and emphasizes the importance of diverse voices and lived realities in shaping feminist thought.

Her writings also extended beyond feminist theory to encompass education, media, and cultural criticism. In TEACHING TO TRANSGRESS (1994), she advanced a radical vision of pedagogy inspired by Paulo Freire’s work, arguing that education should be an act of liberation rather than domination. Through her analysis of film, popular music, and literature in works such as REEL TO REAL: RACE, SEX, AND CLASS AT THE MOVIES (1996), hooks demonstrated how mass media both reflects and reproduces systems of oppression — but also how it can become a space for resistance and reimagining identity.

In later works such as TALKING BACK: THINKING FEMINIST, THINKING BLACK (1989) and ALL ABOUT LOVE: NEW VISIONS (2000), hooks deepened her engagement with feminist praxis, exploring how love, community, and education can serve as radical acts of resistance against patriarchal and capitalist systems. She consistently stresses that feminism is not merely about equality with men but about transforming society by dismantling all forms of domination. This emphasis on love as both personal ethic and social philosophy tied together her decades of writing on feminism, race, and culture, offering a vision of liberation rooted in compassion and mutual care.
