One feature that distinguishes ReNamer from many similar utilities is its project system. You set up renaming rules once, save them as a project, and then simply apply them to new files without having to reconfigure them. This is a huge time saver when you regularly work on repetitive tasks.
The rules are extensive: you can insert text into filenames, delete characters, replace them, and rearrange them.
ReNamer also supports regular expressions for those who are comfortable with them, along with name randomization, serial numbering, and much more. Essentially, you can create any combination of rules to suit your needs.
The interface looks simple, but the functionality inside is more than sufficient for most renaming tasks. Add files, select rules, preview the results, and hit start—it's all logical.
Of the alternatives, I recommend Bulk Rename Utility—it's more powerful in terms of settings, but the interface is cluttered with buttons to the point of being overwhelming. There's also Advanced Renamer—a happy medium between simplicity and functionality.
