* Raja Shehadeh - Collected Works on Palestine (19 books)

RAJA SHEHADEH (b. 1951)
is a prominent Palestinian writer, lawyer, and human rights advocate whose work explores the lived realities of life under Israeli occupation and the moral, legal, and emotional consequences of displacement. Born in Ramallah, Shehadeh was trained as a lawyer in London before returning to the West Bank. In 1979 he co-founded the award-winning Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq, the Palestinian affiliate of the International Commission of Jurists, to document human rights violations. His dual identity as both a legal thinker and a literary writer shapes his distinctive voice: precise, reflective, and grounded in everyday experience rather than political slogans.

Shehadeh is best known for blending memoir with political analysis, using personal narrative to illuminate broader historical and legal structures. His writing often focuses on how occupation reshapes ordinary life—land ownership, movement, family history, and even the act of walking through the landscape. Rather than dramatic set pieces, he emphasizes accumulation: small losses, bureaucratic obstacles, and gradual changes that alter how people relate to their surroundings and to each other.

Among his most influential works is PALESTINIAN WALKS: NOTES ON A VANISHING LANDSCAPE (2007), which won the Orwell Prize. Shehadeh recounts a series of walks through the hills of the West Bank, interweaving memories, legal history, and environmental change to show how settlement expansion and land confiscation transform both geography and identity. The walking motif becomes a powerful metaphor for witnessing, resistance, and remembrance.

Another major work, STRANGERS IN THE HOUSE (2002), is a memoir centered on his relationship with his father, Aziz Shehadeh, a well-known Palestinian lawyer and political figure. Through this personal lens, he examines generational differences in political thought, the challenges of principled compromise, and the emotional costs of a life shaped by conflict. His later books, including OCCUPATION DIARIES (2012) and WE COULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDS, MY FATHER AND I (2022), continue this reflective approach, combining clarity of thought with restrained emotion.

His most recent book, FORGOTTEN (2025), is a search for hidden or neglected memorials and places in historic Palestine and what they might tell us about the land and the people who live on the small slip of earth between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.

Taken together, Raja Shehadeh’s principal works offer a sustained meditation on law, land, and loss, while also insisting on the importance of ethical attention and humane storytelling. His writing stands out for its calm, measured tone and its refusal to simplify complex realities, making his work widely read not only as Palestinian literature but as a significant contribution to global nonfiction and political memoir.
