* David Hume - Collected Philosophical Works (30 books)

DAVID HUME (1711–1776)
was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist, widely regarded as one of the most important figures of the Enlightenment and a central proponent of philosophical empiricism. Hume sought to apply the methods of scientific reasoning to the study of human nature. His philosophy is grounded in the idea that all knowledge arises from sensory experience, and he was deeply skeptical of claims that go beyond what can be directly observed or logically demonstrated. This empiricist and skeptical approach placed him at odds with many of his contemporaries, but it also made his work foundational for later philosophy.

Hume’s most ambitious and systematic work, A TREATISE OF HUMAN NATURE (published in three volumes, 1739–1740), aimed to develop a comprehensive science of human nature. In it, he explores the nature of ideas, causation, belief, and personal identity. Although the Treatise was not well received upon publication, Hume later refined and popularized its arguments in more accessible forms. His AN ENQUIRY CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING (1748) revisits key themes such as causation, induction, and the limits of human knowledge, while AN ENQUIRY CONCERNING THE PRINCIPLES OF MORALS (1751) presents his mature ethical theory, emphasizing sentiment rather than reason as the basis of moral judgments.

In addition to his philosophical works, Hume was a prolific essayist. His ESSAYS, MORAL AND POLITICAL (1741–1742) and later POLITICAL DISCOURSES (1752) address topics ranging from commerce and government to human behavior and taste. These writings were highly influential in his own time and contributed to his reputation as a leading public intellectual. Hume’s essays are notable for their clarity, wit, and practical engagement with social and political issues, making them more immediately popular than his more abstract philosophical treatises.

Later in life, Hume turned to history, producing his multi-volume THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND (1754–1762), which became a bestseller in his lifetime and significantly shaped historical writing in Britain. Although modern historians have criticized it for bias and inaccuracies, it demonstrated Hume’s narrative skill and broad intellectual interests. Across all his works, Hume consistently challenged assumptions about knowledge, religion, and human nature, leaving a lasting legacy that influenced thinkers such as Kant (who credited Hume with awakening him from his "dogmatic slumber") and continues to shape philosophical debate today.

The Clarendon (Oxford) Edition of Hume's work is especially noteworthy and includes all of Hume's works except "The History of England" and minor historical writings. This scholarly edition provides for each text a historical introduction, a statement of editorial policies and principles, historically oriented annotations, extensive bibliography, and a comprehensive index.
