From the course:
Opening Attacks with Black Made Simple
— By Reading the Bishops
Your knights always go to the center. Your queen and rooks — they can wait. But your bishops? They need good squares now. Get this right and your development, your pawn breaks, your attacking plans… everything falls into place!
Case in point:
The pressure on d4 becomes unbearable. All from one well-timed …Bg4 pin.
It works the other way, too.
You swap your …Bg4 for their knight. Then leave White with a bishop doomed to bite on granite!
This bishop-focused planning is at the heart of Attacking Repertoire for Beginners: Caro-Kann and Slav Defense.
Inside, FIDE Master Midas Ratsma and Arthur Maters show you where the bishops belong in every opening line… and how this one decision shapes your structure and paves your path to an advantage.
Ratsma has already guided thousands of Chessable students to the next level… earning a stellar 4.7 stars from nearly 1,000 ratings.
His attacking repertoires and beginner’s guide to chess have become go-to resources for steady improvement without drowning in theory.
Ratsma’s coaching style is simple: trim the fat, focus on core ideas, and arm you with the patterns that actually win games!
He’s joined by Maters who brings the fireworks.
Known for his sharp style, his courses don't just teach you what to play — but how to create tactics-rich positions and come out on top.
Together, they blend clarity with tactical flair… giving you a repertoire that’s practical to learn and lethal on the board.
Let’s Tour You Around the Course
In the first half, Ratsma and Maters lay out your go-to setup against 1.e4 — the Pin Development Plan of the Caro-Kann.
You pin their knight with an early …Bg4. You cement your pawn chain with …e7-e6. Then your queen and knights converge on d4 until it falls.
The beauty behind this Pin Development Plan?
It isn’t tied to one line.
The authors teach you how to set it up in the Advance, the Two Knights, the Exchange, even the Fantasy Variation. No matter what White tries, you’re always heading for the same familiar formation.
Against 1.d4, you answer with the Slav Defense and target their bishop.
Did they go for Bc1-g5, like in so many Queen’s Gambit lines?
Then you uncork the Bishop Attacking Plan with …Ne4! Not only do you hit their loose bishop, you also threaten nasty tactics with your queen swooping to a5.
Did they choose the London or Jobava System?
Your plan couldn’t be simpler — hit their prized bishop with …Nh5. Seen only 0.03% of games, this rare, immediate attack on White’s hanging piece snaps them out of autopilot.
You also get condensed lines against the Nimzo-Larsen Attack (1.b3), English (1.c4), and Reti (1.Nf3). And at this level, you won’t need more, because the bishops keep your game simple.
You plant yours on f5. You build a stronghold with c6, d5, and e6. Then the rest of your pieces develop around it.
From here, it’s all about playing good chess — and Ratsma and Maters give you the tools to do just that.
They don’t just hand you 100+MoveTrainer lines. They show you how to nurse pleasant opening positions into middlegame advantages… and score quick knockouts when the chances appear!
? 6.5 hours of video explain the lines. So you don’t just memorize, you understand.
? 2x Quickstarter guides to target your biggest area of improvement — 1.e4 or 1.d4 and the sidelines.
? “Attacking Plans” chapters to keep your key bishop maneuvers and pressure methods top of mind.
? Tactics chapters with 83 puzzles… because knowing opening lines is good, but spotting the winning combos in them is even better.
If you’ve ever wanted a Black repertoire that’s simple to learn…
One that’s aggressive and built around simple, bishop-focused plans…
Then this is it!
Its lines are short. Its ideas stick. So the rating gains come fast.
