Trama:
È il 1964, St. Nicholas nel Bronx. Un carismatico prete, Padre Flynn, sta cercando di sovvertire le rigide consuetudini della scuola, a lungo gelosamente custodite da Suor Aloysius Beauvier, la preside inflessibile che crede nel potere della disciplina basata sulla paura. I venti del cambiamento politico stanno soffiando sulla comunità e, infatti, la scuola ha appena accolto il suo primo studente nero, Donald Miller. Ma quando Suor James, una ragazza piena di speranza e ingenua, confida a Suor Aloysius il suo sospetto, che la tormenta, che Padre Flynn stia dedicando troppe attenzioni personali a Donald, Suor Aloysius intraprende una crociata personale per scoprire la verità ed espellere Flynn dalla scuola. Ora, senza la minima prova se non la sua certezza morale, Suor Aloysius si ritrova coinvolta in una battaglia di volontà con Padre Flynn che minaccia di lacerare la comunità con conseguenze irreversibili.
