The entire golden age of Italian comedy is built on the fusion of comedy and drama, a trend that began with *I soliti ignoti* and was cemented the following year by the Golden Lion (and the immense commercial success) of *La grande guerra*. The two protagonists of this film, Alberto Sordi and Vittorio Gassman, deliver gags and humorous situations, but in the end they are shot in a dramatic scene that invites viewers to reinterpret all the irony of the preceding situations. For Italy at the time, addressing the “victorious war” of 1915–18 was an almost sacrilegious act, a rupture that had immediate consequences. Upon the announcement of the film’s production and the casting of two actors famous for comedies as leads, major Italian newspapers published a barrage of articles criticizing the idea of portraying that war with two protagonists representing “heroes of fear.” The controversy raged on for months and kept the production in limbo for a long time, but the film’s success—including its commercial success—swept it all away and, above all, made a large group of comedy filmmakers realize that through cinema, one could break free from official historiography and tell the story of how events truly unfolded.
Comedy directors, therefore, are fully aware (as are their screenwriters) that through comedy they can tell the true story of what happened in Italy. One after another, films like *Una vita difficile*, *Anni ruggenti*, *Il federale*, *La marcia su Roma*, *I compagni*, *I due nemici*, and *L’armata Brancaleone* are released. They depict the rise of fascism, the Resistance, and the postwar period; but also the workers’ strikes at the turn of the century.
Age, screenwriter of many films, says:
The project was the work of a group of filmmakers of which I was a part, and it unfolded gradually. We tried to focus a bit more on the characters, the story, and the setting. The process took several years and was marked by—if one can call them that—increasingly higher standards. After I soliti ignoti came the leap to La grande guerra and the first Italian strike in I compagni, an achievement we made step by step because the Italian public accepted these films gradually. And then Tutti a casa, which dealt with 1943, La marcia su Roma, Una vita difficile, which followed the biography of an Italian from the Resistance to the economic boom—a film in which Sordi’s character grew even further—and Il sorpasso, which depicted the boom from the heart of the boom. [...] In *La grande guerra*, even though it dealt with a tragedy, it often ended in farcical moments: it was precisely on that occasion that we asked ourselves, with some anxiety, whether we could attempt the difficult task of combining tragedy and farce. In short, true Italian-style comedy was one that possessed certain specific qualities and content, and which, as a novelty compared to the rest, had this important feature: that it was not merely aimed at making people laugh or smile, but also at making them think and planting in the minds of the audience some doubt about their political convictions, or at least some second thoughts about a certain way of life.
The golden age of Italian comedy, with its actors (Alberto Sordi, Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi), its directors (Mario Monicelli, Dino Risi, Luigi Comencini, Luigi Zampa), and its screenwriters (in addition to the directors, also Age, Furio Scarpelli, Ettore Scola, Rodolfo Sonego, Leo Benvenuti, Piero De Bernardi, and Suso Cecchi d’Amico), is in fact the backbone of Italian cinema in the 1960s. It is a cinema that knows how to portray the society in which we live, sketching out all the contradictions and difficulties of an Italy that, within a decade, became an industrial powerhouse, whereas just a few years earlier it had been an agricultural country where millennia-old traditions persisted. (Steve Della Casa)
