Na een gruwelijke samenloop van omstandigheden wordt de verwaande jonge advocaat Michael
Gray veroordeeld voor de moord op een gedetineerde en wordt cel 213 in de South River
State gevangenis zijn thuishaven. Onnatuurlijke krachten zorgen ervoor dat gevangenen
in hoge mate zelfmoord plegen en Michael ontdekt al snel dat de kwestie van schuld en
onschuld niet zo eenvoudig is als hij wil geloven. God en de duivel strijden al voor
zielen sinds het bestaan van de mens en de strijd duurt voort in cel 213.
