* David Graeber - Collected Works (17 books)

DAVID GRAEBER (1961–2020)
was an American anthropologist and anarchist social and political activist. His influential work in social and economic anthropology, particularly his books Debt: The First 5,000 Years (2011), The Utopia of Rules (2015), Bullshit Jobs (2018), and The Dawn of Everything (2021), and his leading role in the Occupy Wall Street movement earned him recognition as one of the foremost anthropologists and left-wing thinkers of his time. His work is characterized by its ability to dismantle seemingly "natural" economic and social structures, replacing them with a vision of human history defined by creativity and self-organization.

His early academic career focused on the anthropological roots of social value and hierarchy. In TOWARD AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY OF VALUE (2001), he synthesized Marx and Mauss to redefine value as a form of human meaning-making. This period also produced FRAGMENTS OF AN ANARCHIST ANTHROPOLOGY (2004), which proposed that anarchist principles of direct democracy and horizontal organization were already present in many non-state societies. He followed this with DIRECT ACTION: AN ETHNOGRAPHY (2009), a detailed study of the global justice movement and the practical application of anarchist theory.

Graeber's most famous works addressed the historical and modern tools of social control. DEBT: THE FIRST 5,000 YEARS (2011) famously argued that debt and credit systems predated money and have long been used to maintain power through moralized obligation. He expanded his critique of modern systems in THE UTOPIA OF RULES (2015), which analyzed how bureaucracy stifles imagination, and in BULLSHIT JOBS: A THEORY (2018), where he critiqued the proliferation of meaningless administrative roles in contemporary capitalism. Throughout this decade, he also published THE DEMOCRACY PROJECT (2013), providing an "inside look" at Occupy Wall Street and the history of radical democracy.

His final contributions, published posthumously, sought to radically reframe the history of human freedom and enlightenment. THE DAWN OF EVERYTHING (2021), co-authored with David Wengrow, challenges the long-held notion that human societies were once simple, egalitarian bands that inevitably became hierarchical as they grew in size and complexity. This was followed by PIRATE ENLIGHTENMENT, OR THE REAL LIBERTALIA (2023), which explored how pirate societies in Madagascar influenced Enlightenment thinking. These works, alongside essay collections like THE ULTIMATE HIDDEN TRUTH OF THE WORLD (2024), cement his legacy as a thinker who urged us to remember that since we made the world, we can also "make it differently"
